How we do it:
High groundwater levels can significantly influence system design. When groundwater rises above the base of the system, two additional forces must be considered: hydrostatic uplift (buoyancy) and hydrostatic lateral pressure.

Hydrostatic Uplift (Buoyancy)
When a system is installed below the groundwater table, an impermeable liner is typically used to prevent groundwater from entering the system. This creates hydrostatic uplift forces, as the surrounding groundwater exerts an upward pressure on the structure equal to the weight of the displaced water. The system must be designed to adequately resist these uplift forces and maintain long-term stability. Potential mitigation measures include increasing the depth or density of soil cover, incorporating geogrid reinforcement, or providing concrete ballast slabs.

Hydrostatic Lateral Pressure
Groundwater also generates hydrostatic pressures that contribute to the lateral loads acting on the system. These pressures are evaluated alongside standard dead loads, live loads, earth pressures, and other applicable design loads to verify that the structure remains stable and structurally sound under the anticipated installation conditions.
