Underground Stormwater Management Facilities

Extreme storms bring flooding, resulting in damage to public and private properties. Flooding risks can be alleviated through the introduction of underground stormwater management facilities, which collect, store, and distribute the stormwater through the system.

Prevention in Huron Heights Park, Mississauga

Hydrostatic Uplift (Buoyancy) 

The city of Mississauga is taking flooding prevention seriously. In recent years, nearby Cooksville Creek’s watershed experienced flooding on numerous occasions due to heavy rainfall. As a result, they performed a Municipal Class Environmental (EA) Study in July of 2012 to develop a plan to reduce future flood risks in the watershed and prevention strategies.

The study recommended 13 stormwater management facilities across the watershed to store water during extreme weather. As a result, Huron Heights was selected as one of the locations to receive a facility.

What Stormcon Provided

The Huron Heights Park facility was designed to store approximately 5,000 m³ of water. The resulting structure included 1555 chambers spread across 29 rows, and measured 55m wide x 60m long. The facility will collect the stormwater beneath the park, ultimately increasing capacity of storm sewers and watercourses downstream for Cooksville Creek. Included in the project was an oil/grit separator to remove sediment and oil from runoff.

Benefits of the Project to the Park

• Improved drainage in the park and surrounding area
• Reduced flooding risk in the Cooksville Creek Watershed during severe rainfall
• Updated landscaping and baseball diamond for the affected areas during construction

Looking to install a stormwater management system, but concerned about high groundwater levels? We can design the perfect solution!

How we do it:

High groundwater levels can significantly influence system design. When groundwater rises above the base of the system, two additional forces must be considered: hydrostatic uplift (buoyancy) and hydrostatic lateral pressure.

Hydrostatic Uplift (Buoyancy) 

When a system is installed below the groundwater table, an impermeable liner is typically used to prevent groundwater from entering the system. This creates hydrostatic uplift forces, as the surrounding groundwater exerts an upward pressure on the structure equal to the weight of the displaced water. The system must be designed to adequately resist these uplift forces and maintain long-term stability. Potential mitigation measures include increasing the depth or density of soil cover, incorporating geogrid reinforcement, or providing concrete ballast slabs.

Hydrostatic Lateral Pressure

Groundwater also generates hydrostatic pressures that contribute to the lateral loads acting on the system. These pressures are evaluated alongside standard dead loads, live loads, earth pressures, and other applicable design loads to verify that the structure remains stable and structurally sound under the anticipated installation conditions.

We’re taking a quick look at some of our highlights from 2025, and we’re inviting you to take a trip down memory lane with us. Here are a couple of the interesting and unique projects we completed:

‘The Vault’ – Nobleton, ON

• Installed: Fall 2025
• System Type: Vault
• Municipal project
• Volume: 7,607 m3
• System purpose:

Stormcon worked with Schaeffers Consulting Engineers to design the stormwater management system for a new subdivision in Nobleton, ON. Stormcon designed and specified both quantity and quality control for the site using the Vault system and an OGS unit.

The Vault system comprises GreenStorm and StormCrete.  StormCrete provides upstream water quality control, which when paired with an OGS unit was designed to achieve 80%TSS removal. Downstream, a GreenStorm system was designed to provide extended detention for the subdivision.

All this infrastructure was integrated beneath the park.  This solution delivers advanced stormwater management for the subdivision while preserving valuable, usable greenspace above the system.

GreenStorm Municipal Project – Chippawa, ON

• Installed: Spring 2025
• System Type: GreenStorm
• Municipal project
• Volume: 5,412 m³
• System purpose:

Stormcon worked with R.V. Anderson Associates (RVA) to design the stormwater management system for a new subdivision in Niagara Falls. The system, which will be municipally assumed, was designed to store 5,412.26 m³ of stormwater.

At the inlets, Stormcon collaborated with RVA to incorporate maintenance rows, reducing the time and cost required for system upkeep. Each inlet includes treatment rows and box manholes, providing ample space for personnel and maintenance equipment to easily inspect and maintain the system. A dry pond located above the system provides additional storage during heavy storm events. Overall, the design delivers a safer and more efficient stormwater management solution while maximizing usable greenspace within the development.
